Colin Self (US)

October - December 2026

‍

In cooperation with Tanzquartier Wien (TQW)

‍

Colin Self is an artist, composer, and puppeteer based between Brooklyn and Berlin, working across performance, music, and speculative systems design. Their practice centers on creating temporary communities and experimental dialogues that probe the boundaries between the living and the deceased, the material and the immaterial. Through the assembly of mixed ensembles, puppetry, and spatial intervention, Self constructs participatory environments for collective experience and spiritual exploration. Their work treats play as a serious methodology for generating new forms of social relation, while remaining fundamentally collaborative, the boundaries between artist, performer, and audience deliberately remain porous.

‍

During their residency at PART, Self will develop the recorded and live components of an untitled forthcoming choral work. Working with a multi-channel roving speaker array, handmade puppets, and ensemble configurations that blend professional musicians with untrained vocalists, they will develop the composition, staging, and dramaturgical framework for the piece. The residency culminates in a work-in-progress presentation in December, offering an opportunity to test the work's dimensions within Vienna's context and to engage local participants in their collaborative practice.
