Odie Lap Chun Chow works with ceramics and photography to reflect on how urban spaces construct and alter identity. Combining images of urban landscapes with plaster mould making, he explores the interaction between humans and their built environment, and the entangled relationship between raw materials from the land and the cultures they give rise to. In the creation of spaces meant to eliminate uncertainty, Odie instead senses disorientation — drawing him to liminal, fear-inducing spaces within the urban world.

During the residency, Odie will continue his research from local material exploration and plaster mould practice toward the physical and mental spaces of people within urban landscapes. As a craftsperson attentive to how identity is woven by one's surroundings, he extends his long-standing question — "what is the role of a craftsperson?" — into "what is the role of a city dweller?", using construction materials and images to investigate how inner spaces are shaped by identity, urban interaction, and imagination, and how one might reclaim agency over them.
